Shrink tubing is used for a number of different applications:

• For protecting cables.
• For repairing cables.
• Provide cables with identification.

The most common application is to protect cables. Shrinking heat shrink tubing around a cable creates an extra layer of protection around the cable. Heat shrink tubing offers five forms of protection:

• Mechanical protection: protect the cable(s) against wear, dents and tears.
• Electrical protection: insulating the cable.
• Thermal protection: Some types of heat shrink tubing are flame retardant or self-extinguishing, which protects the cable from fire damage.
• Chemical protection: Some types of heat shrink tubing are resistant to acids, salts, chlorides, and other chemicals, and can protect cables from these substances.
• Environmental protection: Heat shrink tubing can protect cables from UV rays, corrosion, and sometimes provides a watertight seal – especially the adhesive types.
